We have now been in Berlin for a week! Hard to believe! And we have been away from our Oregon home for 19 days, almost three weeks. Our little guy has been a champ and we are learning sooooo much with him as we travel but I have to admit….traveling with a toddler is hard a lot of the time, sweet most of the time and full of memories all of the time.
Traveling with a one year old is definitely for the resilient and the brave. We were so eager to get to Berlin last Friday and excited about returning to our Germany home turf. As I posted, we immedately brunched with some of our favorite people and hit up playgrounds right away.
On Sunday afternoon we went to see some of our other favorite people….Ana’s best friends from Belgrade who also moved to Berlin. We are chosen family together and were eager to see him. We had a fantastic visit and didn’t want to leave their beautiful home but our little guy was all of a sudden very lethargic and warm. It was time to get to our apartment and see what was happening with our little dude.
He had a high fever that night and we spent the evening trying to cool him down. We ended up ordering food and watching Ms. Rachel (we hardly ever have screens on around him so it was such a treat for us all in weird circumstances). Sweet memory. He went to bed and we hoped that things would even out. But the next morning he was having a high fever yet again. So we laid low and got him medicated with tylenol but after a nap, the fever was there again. 39 (C) and 102 F. Ugh.
This happened off and on again over the next days until Wednesday afternoon we found a doctor to make sure that this fever didn’t mean something more. We were assured it was just a little viral infection and it would get better soon.
By yesterday he was back to his bread eating little kiddo self and fever free but it means all things have been thrown off…plans, sleep schedules, etc etc.
Travelling with a toddler is hard and sweet and memorable and fun and lovely and sometimes just downright without sleep or rest. Vacation you say? There are days on this journey when I wish we had his bed and our bed and his routines and our routines but we also flew in Ana’s mom as a surprise on Wednesday because we could and that was the sweetest moment of all when they reunited so I am so glad we are doing this too.
