Today’s scripture:
Luke 10:21-24
At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, ‘I thank* you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.’Then turning to the disciples, Jesus* said to them privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it
What we see. In reading my many daily lectionary resources (there are variations) this passage grabbed my attention. Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. Many people want what the disciples see and hear but what do they see and hear?
As many of you know, I love the group Improv Eveywhere. There mission is to create joy in the everyday experiences. They have done everything from no pants subway rides to musicals in food courts to hanging out in best buy with blue shirts and khakis on. I have highlighted some of their videos before. I want to look through their lenses. Instead of drab in a scenario I want to see where life can happen. What if we expected to see God in these spaces? What if we just expected to make the space a bit better?
Here is one of their newest improvs from this year. In putting a microphone in a drab place with just a sign, the world is transformed, ok at least just changed a bit, for the better.
If that one didn’t grab you, here is a short oldie but goodie in which a commute turns fun and unexpected by simple gestures.
Both experiences are about seeing the potential for something completely joyful and full of life instead of the day to day. What if that’s what the disciples could see and hear? They were seeing Jesus heal, preach, teach, and create miracle. They were seeing Jesus bring light to dark places. They were seeing Jesus find that God was already there. How would your day today change if you saw God in your day to day places? What if you expected it?
Prayer: God of light and darkness, help us to see you in the mundane. Empower us to create joyful and transformational moments in the drab places of life. Amen.
