It’s Easter! Hooray! Thanks for taking this journey with me all!
Today’s scripture: Luke 24:1-12 (NRSV) But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ Then they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.

I am sitting at my computer as the sun is beginning to rise. There are gorgeous oranges and tints of red and it makes me think about the walk to the tomb by the women. What they are about to find won’t be described well, people won’t believe them and it will be filled with awe, terror, and surprise. When did we lose that kind of moment? When did we become numb to the fact that this story is a big deal and what we need to believe in.
We need to believe that life wins, not death…that good wins, not evil….that love wins, not hate…that the sun will rise tomorrow. This is what we are all about as Easter people. Help us to hear that message today. I am going to leave you with two resources this morning…first an awesome video that always gets me excited….
And second a blessing….
Easter Blessing by Jan Richardson
If you are looking
for a blessing,
do not linger
here.
Here
is only
emptiness,
a hollow,
a husk
where a blessing
used to be.
This blessing
was not content
in its confinement.
It could not abide
its isolation,
the unrelenting silence,
the pressing stench
of death.
So if it is
a blessing
that you seek,
open your own
mouth.
Fill your lungs
with the air
that this new
morning brings
and then
release it
with a cry.
Hear how the blessing
breaks forth
in your own voice
how your own lips
form every word
you never dreamed
to say.
See how the blessing
circles back again
wanting you to
repeat it
but louder
how it draws you
pulls you
sends you
to proclaim
its only word:
risen
risen
risen.
