By Faith

Good morning all! Happy Saturday!  Today we have a guest blogger!  My friend and the church’s new office manager, Amber is our guest blogger.  I asked Amber last night if she would like to blog today and she answered yes right away. She is a busy lady who says yes to ministry.  Enjoy what she has to say!

When I was asked to write this devotional this evening, I quickly agreed.  I expected to be handed a topic and go.  Instead I was left with “Whichever scripture speaks to you.”  I say, “Sure, no problem!” while thinking “Well, this’ll be an adventure…”  An adventure added on to a day full of adventures.  When you’re asked to have an opinion about something you don’t really know, what do you do?  I check with my trusted friend, Google.  Since I’d had a day full of small adventures, of which any one could have easily gone very sour very quickly (but thankfully didn’t), I Googled “What does the bible say about faith?”

James 2:14-26  English Standard Version (ESV)

Faith Without Works Is Dead

14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good[a] is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

So, this is where I say, “That’s good Bible.”  You get a good lesson and it talks about a prostitute.  A good one!  And it’s a passage that strikes home.

Actions mean more than words.  It’s something I’ve been told for years.  But as a kid, the lesson stopped there.  I had never thought about actions counting without the backing.  Can you be truly invested in any endeavor without both?  I don’t think so.
I am passionate about many things, but there are three that come to mind.  My children and their upbringing, food insecurity, and anyone being belittled or marginalized.  I can’t just say that I want my children to grow up to be happy, productive citizens then leave them to their own devices.  I can’t try to mold them into my vision without explaining myself and still expect them to comply either.  I need both pieces for the whole thing to work.  In the same way I can’t say that I’m committed to helping to feed the hungry without donating, fundraising or volunteering.  There is not a situation in life, that I can think of, that doesn’t require intention and action to be impact-full.  But when you add faith…
When you add faith whether in your God, your cause or yourself you create a divine beast all it’s own.  When you act for the true betterment of others with discernment and love that is when we are able to make the biggest difference in the world around us.  Even if it’s 100, 10 or a single soul at a time.  I am lucky to see this intention of action everyday, and sometimes to help it along.
That is why on Monday night I will act for my third passion, and pitch my tent in solidarity with the McMinnville Cooperative Ministries and her Everyday Congregation.  I will stand for the rights of those who deserve more than they are allowed.  Because everyone deserves to be dry, warm, fed and happy.  #holytent
